MUCOUS MEMBRANE OF STOMACH The reddish-gray mucous membrane of the stomach, composed of a surface layer of epithelial cells, the lamina propria, and the muscularis mucosae, commences at the cardia along an irregular or zigzag line (referred to as the Z line).
