a classroom with desks, chairs and a chalkboard on the wall in front of it

This year I moved out of my spacious, mansion-like classroom.... Which looked a little like this... Ok... maybe not, but in my fond memories I had unlimited storage and didn't have to store things in stacks like the leaning tower of Pisa. With our school growing quickly and bursting at the seams I knew it was only a matter of time until I needed to move out of the big classroom and find a "cozier" space that would work. I offered to move into the OT/PT combo room that was currently used as a…

a sign that says tips for a small room

I have a small room (hence the name Little Room Under the Stairs) so organization is very important. 1. Choose a few colors to decorate the room. Small rooms are not a place to go hog wild. A little goes a long way! My cabinets are blue and my walls are a yellowish cream color. I use blue, yellow, and green for my color scheme. 2. Downsize as much as possible. When I moved into my new room, I had 11 boxes of trade books that I had purchased while teaching elementary resource. That took up a…

a classroom with the text 5 tips for getting the most out of your tiny classroom

Have you ever had to teach in a super small classroom? In my first year of teaching, that was exactly what happened. My very first classroom actually used to be a storage closet for PE equipment (not even joking) and was eventually expanded a bit so that it could be converted into a classroom. I only had six students that year (not joking about that either), so we had no trouble fitting in the space, and I also didn't have that much stuff because it was only my first year of teaching. Fast…

children are sitting in chairs and reading books at the library with adults standing around them

Most parents cringe at the thought of sending their child to a portable classroom. Most teachers cringe at the thought of teaching in one. But some teachers like Barfield Elementary fourth-grade teacher Angela Bunyi made the most of her portable by turning it into a home-like environment, complete with couches, carpet and a deck with patio furniture. Bunyi shares one […]

a classroom filled with lots of desks and colorful rugs on the floor in front of them

Another down side to being a new teacher is not having a permanent classroom. In my last post I explained that my classroom is an added classroom. We have such large enrollment numbers at my school that we have 5 Kindergarten classrooms! So, with that being said, I also have the smallest of the 5 classrooms. My classroom isn't even technically a classroom. But, that's fine by me! While everyone else has wall to wall carpet (yuck!), I have a nice tiled floor. The room is a lot brighter and…

the cover of ikea for the classroom, with pictures of different items on it

I absolutely LOVE IKEA and even though the closest one to me is about 3 hours away, I always make a point to go a couple of times a year. A few years ago, I did a post on items from IKEA that teachers can use in their classrooms. You can check out that post HERE (most of those things are still available!). Below are some of my finds from my most recent trip... There are tons of alternative seating options at IKEA. Most of the office type chairs are sold in two parts... the seat and then the…
