Best known for its’ fall color which is second to none. At times there is a mix of orange and red, but more often a hot coppery-red predominates, a show-stopper in autumn. Nice glossy green leaves emerge with a hint of red. Makes a good shade tree, great lawn or park tree.

Nyssa sylvatica | Tupelo or Black Gum is one of our most beautiful native trees. The brilliant red (sometimes almost neon red) fall color can be one of the best for powerful red autumn color. Pyramidal in habit up to middle age, maturing into a tall, oval giant. Nyssa sylvatica was chosen as the 2008 Urban Tree of the Year by the Society of Municipal Arborists. Yes, honey bees do make Tupelo Honey from this tree.

Symmetrical, uniform branch structure and straight central leader make this cultivar both easier to grow and more beautiful in the landscape. High gloss foliage shines through the summer and then turns bright red in fall, burning brightly after most seedling tupelo have defoliated.
