Willem de Kooning (1904-1997) (action painting = lichamelijke activiteit bij het schilderen) Afscheid van de werkelijkheid. In zijn beginperiode werkte De Kooning zowel figuratief als abstract. Maar hij ontwikkelde zijn stijl in de jaren veertig steeds verder in de richting van het abstract expressionisme.
