National Food and Drink Manufacturing Health and Safety Conference 2015

IOSH Food and Drink Group staged its annual conference and awards at Chesford Grange Hotel, Kenilworth, Warwickshire, on 6-7 October 2015. The two-day programme centred around the theme of 'A healthy recipe for leaders'. Delegates were able to share their thoughts on proceedings live this year via Twitter, using the hashtag #fdconf15

The 2015 conference was chaired by Gerard Hand, a former President of IOSH. "This conference continues to grow year-on-year. One of the reasons is your sector's passion and commitment to the cause," he said.

IOSH Food and Drink Group organised the conference. Group Chair John Boyle highlighted plans to share best practice among members through a new safety culture initiative. "By 2022 we will need approximately 109,000 new recruits to meet the changing skills and demands of the sector, as it moves more into emerging technology and different ways of working," he said.

Managing change in turbulent times was the theme of this year's keynote address, which was given by Stephen Carver or Cranfield University. “Increasingly all people do is react to change instead of riding the change,” Stephen said.

Giles Hyder, HM Principal Inspector at the Health and Safety Executive (HSE), spoke about the revised 'A recipe for safety' guidelines, published earlier this year. The guide has been credited with helping to more than half the number of injuries and fatal accidents in the food and drink manufacturing sector over the last 25 years. A target has been set to reduce injuries and ill health in food and drink manufacturing by 10 per cent annually over the next five years, Giles Hyder, HM Principal Inspector at the Health and Safety Executive (HSE), told conference.

Matt Birtles of Health and Safety Laboratory highlighted the organisation's development of a new Variable Manual Handling Assessment Chart (V-MAC), which can be used to monitor the risk of workers suffering musculoskeletal disorders when doing repetitive tasks.
