Castles to Visit
Guess where? Did you guess Ethiopia (anywhere in Africa for that matter)? Well done! This castle is part of the royal enclosure in Gondar. After Axum and Lalibela before Addis Ababa this city North of Tana Lake and East of the Sudanese border was the capital of the Ethiopian kingdom. Over generations the new kings would build a new castle in the complex leaving the previous one to the king mother and widow of the predecessor. #africa360 #ethiopia #notesontraveling #gondar #gondor #unescoheritage
The Castle is the only real, full-sized castle in North America, built in the 1910s. The construction of this Castle cost a staggering $3.5 million of 1910s dollars and was clearly one of the largest undertakings in real estate of its time. Once a private residence of Sir Henry Mill Pellatt, it has since become the property of the city of Toronto, but could return to private hands more than a hundred years later.
