Life under Segregation: Department Store, Mobile, Alabama, 1956 (photo courtesy of The Gordon Parks Foundation / Steidl)
Shot by Gordon Parks, one the greatest African American photographers of our time - I remember those two words as though it was yestrday
Ex-US Marine and Civil rights activist William Lewis Moore. Traveling to Mississippi to hand-deliver a letter to its segregationist governor to change his racist views, he was shot to death April in Alabama. Likely suspect was not charged and bused away.
Many African Americans thought after World War I they would be treated equally when they went back home but that was not the case. With Jim Crow Laws, segregation, and increased racism African Americans were treated more unfair than before.
This picture shows a young caucasian that is holding a poster saying "We won't go to school with negroes." Because of the Jim Crow Laws these children are learning to be racist towards African Americans.
