Short Adventures from London - No 1 - Cycle and Walk the Avon Valley

Recipe for perfect 2 day trip. Day 1 9am train from Paddington to Bradford on Avon -3 hrs . Rent bicycle from Towpath Trails nr stn. Cycle 12 miles (90 mins) on towpath east to locks at Devizes. with lunch stop at Barge Inn. Return bikes & walk 1.5 miles along river west to Cross Guns Inn Avoncliff. Day 2. After breakfast follow the 5 mile '2 Valleys Walk' from the hotel via Freshford Inn & Ilford Manor. Return to hotel, then catch the 350 pm train to Paddington from Avoncliff station.

Bradford On Avon

You can pick up bicycles to hire from Towpath Trails near the station at Bradford On Avon. It is 12 miles up to Devizes (90 minutes cycle) along the car free tow path.

Caen Hill Bottom Lock

The famous lochs of Caen Hill (Devizes) . There are 29 locks which rise 237 feet over 2 miles. Quite a sight - particularly when canal boats are going through the system.
