Bedgown 1

Welsh bedgown: Made of red and black (or very dark blue) striped flannel with a well tailored back and low-cut front, sometimes hooked or threaded across the bosom and open below this to expose a skirt (originally a petticoat) which was normally covered by an apron.

Although the painting is titled 'Tenby Fisherwoman', the central figure is an oyster seller from Llangwm, a small village on the western bank of the Cleddau River. The Llangwm oysterwomen regularly walked to Tenby with their baskets of oysters.
