Jeff Wall, La Chambre détruite (1978) est sa première photographie célèbre s’inspirant du tableau La Mort de Sardanapale, de Delacroix. À nous d’imaginer ce qu’il s’est passé, ce qui a pu conduire à cette destruction. Des indices sont laissés dans ce chaos, montrant l’intimité de la vie de cette femme. Seule chose intacte, la petite statuette de la danseuse dominant le carnage, ressemblant au roi dans la peinture de Delacroix.
