Even though I was a teenager in the 1970s, I still found I had to research the era to be able to write about it. Reading copies of Go-Set, a rock & pop music magazine of the 1970s, helped me understand popular culture and fashions of the time.

Bathing Boxes - Brighton Beach. Back in the early 1970s, many of the bathing boxes along Melbourne's foreshore were falling into disrepair. In the novel, Marie-Claire and PJ spend time playing in a battered green bathing box. I love rambling along Melbourne beaches when I was a teenager and spent many hours sitting on the steps of old bathing boxes with my friends.

Luna Park Melbourne PJ loved visiting Luna Park. I loved describing it as I remembered it to be in 1973. One of my favourite Melbourne places when I was a kid.

Peter Sarstedt - Where Do You Go To My Lovely (1969) The character of Marie-Claire in 'Walking Home with Marie-Claire' didn't like her real name so she borrowed her new name from the lyrics of this song.

In Walking Home with Marie-Claire, PJ attends a birthday party on the day of the 1972 election. The 1972 election campaign had a big impact on teenagers in the early seventies.
