The very noticeable constellation Orion the Hunter rises before dawn at this time of year, recognizable for the short straight line of three stars that make up Orion’s Belt. And the sky’s brightest star Sirius – sometimes called the Dog Star because it’s part of the constellation Canis Major the Greater Dog – follows Orion into the sky at or close to dawn.

Orion the Hunter. Sirius (the brightest star in our sky) - which marks Canis Major, Canis Minor, and Lepus. On February evenings, look south (from northern latitudes) to find Orion. Use the bright stars of his belt to locate Canis Major, Canis Minor, and Lepus. Orion and his companions were so bright last Saturday evening. "Orion is arising, you can see his stars ablazing...." Anyone remember that song?

Orion's Belt is one of the most recognizable constellations with it's 3-star belt. Run an imaginary line across the middle star in the Belt (from lo-right to upper-left) and find lovely champaigne-colored Betelgeuse. Run the line down thru the mid-star of the Belt to the right and there is Rigel. Below and left (in direct line of the Belt) is brilliant blue Sirius, flickering like a happy firefly; and high above, almost in line with the Belt, is pink Aldebaran, the brightest star in Taurus.

The bright, pinkish-white star at upper left of Orion is Betelgeuse. A red supergiant, it is one of the largest and most luminous stars known. If it were at the center of our solar system, its surface would extend to the orbit of Jupiter and beyond, wholly engulfing Mercury, Venus, Earth and Mars. Betelgeuse is approximately 640 light-years away from Earth.

The Great Nebula in Orion can be found with the unaided eye just below and to the left of the easily identifiable belt of three stars in the popular constellation Orion.The whole Orion Nebula cloud complex, will slowly disperse over the next 100,000 years.
