Somerhill Farm My drying rack My hubby built me a similar one with green plastic mesh lumber store on old window frames that rested on the tall wheeled rack Really speeds. Spinning Wool, Hand Spinning, Spinning Wheels, Alpacas, Old Window Frames, Plastic Mesh, Sheep Wool, Fibres, Needle Felting

My drying rack

This is the rack Chuck built me right after we moved to this farm. We had several aluminum window screens from the old farmhouse, so he built a wooden frame for them to slide into. There are 14 screens about 4" apart, so it dries a lot of wool in a fairly small space. Its full of BFL wool that I washed last night. These nice dry late summer days are perfect for drying.

No blending board for rolags? No problem

I've been spinning on a wheel since Christmas Day 2014, have been spinning on a drop spindle since October 2014, and became interested in spinning my own yarn (and obsessed with blogs, articles and youtube videos on anything to do with spinning fibers/dyeing fibers) since September 2014! Since December I have been enamored with this particular photo I took off from pinterest: NOT MY YARN or WORK... just showing a photo I took from pinterest that started my quest to make something of like…

My Favorite Chain-Plying Trick — With Wool

I love chain-plied yarn. I love how plump it is compared to 2-ply yarn. I love how it keeps the clear distinct color of the single and fiber. I love how I can take one single from one bobbin and ply it into something that looks like it came off of three. What I don’t love is stopping in t

How to Determine How Much Fiber to Spin for Your Project

(I suggest reading the previous article, "3 Tools to Make Your Spinning Better", before reading this one.....) I've often heard spinners ask the question: how much fiber do I need to make X item? And the answer to that question is done by determining the GRIST of your completed yarn. Grist is essentially, the mass of your fiber times the length of said fiber. Grist = Length per Weight = L / W In order to determine how much fiber you need for a given project, you need to create a finished…

Spinning Andean Stories of Handspun Yarn - ClothRoads

I’m sitting contentedly, knitting away with my handspun alpaca yarn on a hat that I could use right now. And I’m watching the video Andean Spinning, listening to the voices of two of my favorite women, Nilda Callañaupa Alvarez and Linda Ligon, as they talk about spinning the Andean way, share tales of culture and textile heritage, and teach me to spin.
