"To his left, a row of shops on a raised concrete gantry overlooked the market stalls. There was a chippy there, and a donut seller... The row of shops spilled out at the end into a paved circle with benches, where shoppers munched on cheap food and pigeons pecked around their feet. The only thing he recognised was the statue of Nelson, roughly in the same position it would occupy in 2014, although everything around it was different."

Remember all those neon signs around the Bull Ring (1960s version)? I think this publicity shot was taken just a few years after it had all been built, Woolworths has a slightly more modern illuminated sign. top left is an advert for benson and hedges and Manns be still does you the power of good (or so it says). Even then, half the top of the 'Manns' advert has stopped working, along with the 'G' in 'RING'.
