Jim Dine

1010 Drawing: Jim Dine: Amazing Drawings I liked this drawing because at first I had no idea what it was but when I looked closer it almost looked three dimensional.

Charcoal, lithographic crayon, and enamel paint on paper 17 1/4 x 13 inches Dine's enthusiasm for materials and process is evident in the large, inky fingerprints (near the swaths of charcoal in the upper right corner) and in the abraded surface. He sanded the sheet with an emery board and picked at it with an etching-plate scraper and razor blade "to put more light into the drawing."

Jim Dine No. 2003 Charcoal, pastel, graphite and acrylic on collaged paper 39 x 45 in.

Charcoal and lithographic crayon on paper 14 3/4 x 10 3/4 inches Of his process, Dine has said: "In a drawing, I dig into the paper with marks for the ultimate emotional impact." For all the Glyptotek Drawings, Dine chose to work solely with black media. The white patches highlighting the figure at her nape, forehead, and behind her hair are the result of the artist abrading the surface with a knife or scraper.
