Now this is a centerpiece! The Neptune Centrepiece, 1741/2. Described as ‘the purest rococo creation in English silver, it forms part of the superb Marine Service of rococo plate which was almost certainly supplied for Frederick, Prince of Wales, in the early 1740s. The highly fashionable design shows a strong continental influence and reflects the sophisticated tastes and inspired patronage of the Prince, who played a significant role in introducing the rococo style into England.

*The elegant Ionic-scrolled day beds, designed in the early l9th century French/antique or Grecian manner, are upholstered in Etruscan red velvet with 'squab' mattressed and rolled pillows. The low serpentined backs, appropriate for their contemporary position as comfortable fireside furnishings, are exceptionally well drawn with tremendous movement which is further emphasised by the gilded flute and shape of the arms. An unusual set of early 19th century mahogany and rosewood crossbanded bedside steps of large proportions attributed to Gillows of Lancaster and London. The rectangular top with gallery on three sides above a cupboard with single door having oval caned panels and fluted column support to the corners. The lift up lid in front revealing a pull out drawer. The steps crossbanded and having leather insert with blind tooling; on four turned tapering legs. English, circa 1800
