Werner Bischof: JAPAN. Town of Hiroshima. Memorial for the victims of the atomic explosion. In the background: a former exhibition hall. 1951.

Shadow of death: The stone steps at the entrance to the Hiroshima Branch of Sumitomo Bank, located 260 meters from the hypocenter, were imprinted with the shadow of an atomic bomb victim, the so-called “shadow of death.” This shadow was a consequence of the bomb’s heat rays, a blistering 4000 degrees Celsius. In 1959, a fence was placed around this portion of the steps and, in 1967, the fading shadow was protected with reinforced glass.
