2007 Kentucky Derby winner STREET SENSE gave his jockey Calvin Borel his first ever Derby win, and it was done while her Majesty the Queen of England was in the US visiting and also watched her very first Kentucky Derby!
1902 Kentucky Derby winner Alan-a-Dale in a pre-race warmup, with Hall of Fame jockey Jimmy Winkfield aboard Alan-a-Dale was a remarkably unsound colt. In order to get him into shape enough to compete in the Derby, owner/breeder Maj. Thomas Clay McDowell drove him in a buggy, which ensured he got exercised yet kept direct weight off of his back and joints. Though he won the race, Alan-a-Dale went lame in the stretch, but “carried on with flawless courage to win by a nose”.
