Imperial China had a custom by which a newborn Empress was guaranteed good fortune throughout her adult life and for many generations. How to Install a Dry Creek Bed: beautiful way to control drainage in landscaping

How to Install a Dry Creek Bed

Control the flow of rainwater across your landscape with an easy-to-install dry creek bed.

This was dug below grade, simulating the way water carves rocky terrain. I like the way plants grow in and along the bed, too. The designer is Bill Schnetz of Schnetz Landscape in Escondido.

Dry Stream Beds in the Garden

The desire to get rid of water-thirsty, high-maintenance lawns has led to the rise (no pun intended) of dry creek beds. After all, you have to replace all that garden space with something. Rocks and boulders are fairly inexpensive and create a natural setting. A dry stream bed can add a sense of motion (rushing water) to the garden. Here are a few dry stream beds I admire, and why. Ocotilla - This is a really cool neutral plant that adds a vertical element and height to the garden, yard, and landscape. It does well in the heat and harsh soil. Other than when it is in bloom the Ocotillo is a grayish neutral color that goes well in most any Southwest, desert, Arizona, or New Mexico landscaping.image by JustTooLazy, via Flickr

Water-Wise Planting: Xeriscape Garden Inspiration

It’s becoming impossible for me to ignore my shaggy front garden with its hodgepodge of plants, bricks and abundant weeds that don’t give much curb appeal. It’s all in the details. Isn’t it always? I’m not generally a fan of kitsch garden ornamentation, but the flow and elegance of this garden makes what could be junky into something extraordinarily beautiful. Its really about the sense of place…. Its that the style of this garden and the place where it is so …
