Maharaja Jagajit Singh (b. 1872, r. 1877-1949) And Rani Kanari of Kapurthala, c. 1890 The young Maharaja and his wife pose for the photograph in an unusually intimate pose unlikely to have been taken in India. Maharaja Jagatjit Singh’s penchant for everything European was to extend to the sartorial choices of his wife, who is seen wearing a tightly corseted gown and long silk gloves.

The little girl in the picture is Padma Raje, eldest of the royal couple's five children, who passed away in 1965.
