In my opinion the most elegant fighter of WWII, the British Hawker Tempest Mk-V. I recommend the book "The Big Show" from pierre Clostermann for a good account of the operations of this outstanding fighter.

The Tempest Mk II equipped Germany-based fighter squadrons of the British Air Forces of Occupation, including 26 Sqn. that replaced their Spitfires with the Tempest Mk II's at Fassberg from January 1947.
