Common names for this flowering species vary depending on location, and the plant is very widespread throughout the Canadian and American west and midwest, reaching as far east as Ontario. I've heard "Three-flowered Avens" and "Old Man's Whiskers", but I find Prairie Smoke the most apt - and poetic.
