Shopping in Portobello and Golborne Road

Portobello Road is probably the world’s best known market, and is nearly 150 years old. Though famous for antiques it’s also a haven for lovers of fashion, food, books and music. It’s the place for anyone who wants to find something really unique or just loves a great bargain. Surrounding Portobello market are lots of unique independent shops. It’s real London with loads of character, a melting pot of people from all over the world, treasure and bargains to discover.

Portobello Road Market

Since dealers began moving into Portobello Road in the late 1940s, Portobello market has been famous for its antiques. It’s still the place to come whether you’re a serious collector or just browsing. On a Saturday, with all the stalls, arcades and shops open, literally hundreds of antique traders have their wares on sale. (There are a few antique street stalls here on Fridays, but most antique dealers sell only on Saturdays.)

One of the handful of independently run bookshops left. Wonderful to browse. Very informed staff. Just across from the Kitchen and Pantry on Kensington Park Road and Elgin Crescent (Portobello).

Habac - every Friday on Portobello Road and Saturday in a Harris Arcade booth. There are around a dozen antiques arcades in Portobello Road and Westbourne Grove between Chepstow Villas and Elgin Crescent. They’re like Doctor Who’s Tardis – much bigger on the inside than they look on the outside – each one crowded with individual dealer booths, and only open on Saturdays.
