Kaikottikali is an extremely popular folk dance performed by the maidens of Kerala. It is a group dance and is mainly performed on the occasion of Onam and Thiruvathira. Thiruvathira is a Hindu festival celebrated in Kerala on the full moon day of the month of Dhanu (December or January). The sinuous movements executed by a group of dancers around a lamp, embody 'lasya' or the amorous charm and grace of the feminine. The dance follows a circular, pirouetting pattern accompanied by clapping of the hands and singing. Thiruvathirakali today is popular dance form for all seasons.
