Before I take you for a walk, let me say that life around our homestead is not always sunshine and roses. Money is often tight, animals die, the kitchen floor needs mopping, the dryer might be running on a rainy day, and I may occasionally convince my hubby to pick up supper on his way home from work. Are we perfect? Absolutely not! But, for the most part, we strive to live as simply as we can.

I wish I could say that self-sufficient homesteading was an inexpensive way to live, but in all reality, the initial start-up cost of setting up a homestead can be very expensive, and the learning curve can be steep at times. We had a dream to move to the country and live a more self-sufficient lifestyle for many years before it actually happened. #homesteading #costofhomesteading #homesteader #backyardfarming #chickens #goats #diyhomestead

#prepper #preparedness #waterstorage Anyone that's experienced a natural disaster has probably seen the run on stores that happens before the storm hits. People rush every last store and gas station, clearing every last water bottle off of the shelves. Who should store water at home? FEMA recommends that everyone has at least three days of water stored for each member of your home. Since services can be interrupted for weeks following a storm, you should store as much water as you can at home.

In those early days, I tried to figure out where I fit in with the whole “Back to the Land Movement.”I had never heard the word homesteading and I really didn’t even know what it would look like. Little did I know I had grown up with homesteading parents and didn’t even know it. #homesteading #simpleliving #homesteadlife #homesteader #livingsimple #frugalliving #homemaking #urbanhomesteading #backyardfarming

If you haven’t gathered, we bought a new homestead, new to us, because there is nothing new about this 120-year-old farmhouse. The house, the grounds, the barns, and sheds are in dire need of some much needed, tender loving care.Through all the dust and overgrown grounds is 2 ½ beautiful homesteading acres that are just begging for someone to call them home. #homesteading #homesteaders #thisoldhouse #oldfarmhouse

To get started with your own backyard chickens you can buy chickens at any age, but we like to buy day-old chicks so we can watch their development. It’s so exciting to see that baby chick grows into an egg-producing hen. Purchase your chicks from a local hatchery, your local feed store, or online. #chickens #backyardchickens #babychicks #backyardfarming #fresheggs #homesteading #homesteader
