Pilots of No 310 Squadron RAF pose for an AM photographer upon their formation at RAF Duxford on 10 July 1940. They were the first RAF Fighter Command squadron to be raised and crewed by foreign nationals. Led by S/L George DM Blackwood and using experienced Czechoslovak pilots, the unit was operational in only a month and as part of No 12 Group became involved in the Battle of Britain, claiming a total of 37½ victories.

On the night of 28th / 29th May 1942, Beaufighter X7583, piloted by Flt Sgt Ladislaw Bobek with Sgt Kovaric as navigator, intercepted a lone Dornier Do217 off the coast of Norfolk, sending it plunging into the North Sea after a 20 minute chase.  This was the first of Bobek's victories for 68 Sqn which was made up almost entirely of Czech exiles, the squadron being based at High Ercall.  Flt Sgt Ladislaw Bobek would go on to become an Ace with 5 confirmed victories.

219 Squadron was formed on 4 October 1939 at Catterick, equipped with Bristol Blenheim IF fighters. The unit's task was to protect Northern coastal shipping and routes, but it was soon diverted to night operations.
