Hand-drawn Kalamkari cotton Dupatta, India. A dupatta (Hindi: दुपट्टा, Punjabi: ਦੁਪੱਟਾ/ਚੁੰਨੀ, دوپٹا, Urdu: دوپٹا‎) is the long, matching scarf essential to many South Asian women's garment ensembles. In the Srikalahasti style of Kalamkari, the "kalam" or pen is used for freehand drawing of the subject with vegetable dyes. This style flowered around temples and so had a quasi- religious identity, depicting deities and scenes taken from the great Hindu epics.
