Louis XIV commissioned the hospital for wounded, sick or homeless soldiers. Built between 1671 and 1676 by Libéral Bruant, and later by Jules Hardouin-Mansart and Robert de Cotte. It continues its care of soldiers to this day, but also now houses three military history museums within the complex.
