The Perseid meteor shower is caused by debris from Comet Swift-Tuttle as it swings through the inner solar system and ejects a trail of dust and gravel along its orbit. When the Earth passes through the debris specs of comet-stuff hit the atmosphere at 140000 mph and disintegrate in flashes of light. Meteors from this comet are called Perseids because they seem to fly out of the constellation Perseus.  Last year this meteor shower peaked during a bright supermoon so visibility was reduced…

On April 5th in Albany, Missouri, Dan Bush witnessed an ISS-lunar conjunction: "The moon was surrounded by a beautiful ice halo when the space station passed by," says Bush. "This is a composite of eight 20-second exposures."

The image was taken in late May, 2013 using a Nikon D800E camera, Nikkor 14-24 mm lens, Really Right Stuff tripod, ball head and panorama head with settings at 14 mm, ISO 6400, f/2.8, 20 second exposure, 4000K white balance for each of 11 images.
