Mauna Loa Observatory - I wish I can say more about this place other than it's a great drive just before Mauna Kea and has some very scenic vantages.  It's well known for it's most recent (and by recent, I mean 1984) eruption that ended just outside of Hilo.  Evidence of the last flow is still present and also a reminder that it can happen again in the near future.  Be careful driving as the roads are narrow and can have blind/sharp turns.
