In April 1939, a woman soldier in the Salvation Army played a guitar solo for street urchins in a San Francisco slum. The Great Depression was grinding along, year after year, as government projects failed to create prosperity. The photograph was made by the celebrated Dorothea Lange, for the Farm Services Administration.

The Salvation Army is known for many things, but did you know that we have a famous donut recipe?  During World War I, Salvation Army workers served coffee and doughnuts to soldiers in the trenches. Rations were poor so the doughnut idea was conceived as a means of bringing cheer.
