Dame Barbara Hepworth DBE, 1903-1975. "One of the few women artists to achieve international prominence." A leading figure in the St. Ives group, she lived in Trewyn Studios with artist husband Ben Nicholson. A skilled draughtsman, she produced nearly 80 drawings of operating rooms in chalk, ink, and pencil: she said: "There is...a close affinity between the work and approach of both physicians and surgeons, and painters and sculptors." She worked in stone, wood and latterly, bronze.
