Astronomers think ASASSN-14li was produced when a sun-like star wandered too close to a 3-million-solar-mass black hole similar to the one at the center of our own galaxy. For comparison, the event horizon of a black hole like this is about 13 times bigger than the sun, and the accretion disk formed by the disrupted star could extend to more than twice Earth's distance from the sun.

Astronomers detect 'monster star'

Astronomers have just discovered the largest star ever seen. Named R136a1, the star is a behemoth 265 times the mass of our Sun. It is easily the brightest star in the neighborhood (millions of times brighter than our own), but ESO researchers say it used to be a whole lot bigger. In its early days it was probably 320 times the mass of the sun, more than double what astronomers thought was the upper limit for star mass (around 150 solar masses).

An international team of astrophysicists has identified a planet thats 13 times bigger than “our” Jupiter, the largest planet in our solar system. If Jupiter has a diameter of 11 times bigger than Earth’s diameter and two and a half times the mass of all the other planets in the Solar System combined, we can try to imagine the size of the newly discovered planet – a “super-Jupiter” orbiting the massive star Kappa Andromedae.

This planet – called Kappa Andromedae b – has a mass at least 13 times that of Jupiter and an orbit somehow larger than Neptune.
