Kolarbyn is a wonderful and wacky Swedish eco-lodge with 12 elf-like huts scattered through the forest in the Bergslagen region just two hours outside of Stockholm near the misty shores of Lake Skärsjön.

Black grouse males, Bergslagen, Sweden - Just before the sun rises each morning in spring, male black grouse gather on open meadows in the wooded moors and bogs they call home. They puff up their feathers and march around in plain view of the female black grouse, in a competitive display called “lekking.” If the prancing doesn’t get the attention of the ladies, the mating call might.

Ecolodge may be a good place for a truly unplugged vacation. The Swedish ecolodge is completely DIY and off the grid: no running water or electricity here, so best to leave your iPad at home. Guests stay in rudimentary cabins with no heat and are expected to collect their own water, cook their food over an open fire, and — especially in winter — chop a lot of wood to keep the flames going. All this starts at about $71 per night. >>> Thoughts?
