Here is an example of stencilling where no paint is used. Rather, you stencil with varnish, and then stain. The stain doesn't 'take' to the place where the varnish is (so it comes out clear wood color).
This treatment has some cute features such as contrast pleat, buttons, micro piping, but is not good proportionally. The motif & buttons visually cut the shade in half, cutting the window in half and throwing off the width of the window.
