In 1851, this structure was built to serve as the Adams County Prison, replacing a log structure that served the same purpose. The land was originally donated by James Gettys, the founder of Gettysburg, with the intent of erecting a prison. In fact, James Gettys was the first elected Sheriff of Gettysburg. Local legend has it that during the Battle of Gettysburg, General Robert E. Lee held a Council of War in this building. We can only postulate as to what was said in that meeting!
