71 years later, a well-deserved diploma for a WWII veteran. Vernon “Paul” Young was supposed to be a member of the Class of 1942 at North High. But on December 8, 1941 – a day after Pearl Harbor – he left school and enlisted in the U.S. Navy. Today, during North’s Class Day, to recognize the Class of 2013, Paul Young was among those in a green cap and gown and presented with an honorary diploma.
The school district’s purchase of an office building would open up more educational choices in downtown Des Moines. DMPS has made an offer of $1.6 million to purchase the current headquarters of the Iowa Lottery, located at 2323 Grand Avenue, to serve as administrative offices. The move would allow for the expansion of Walnut Street School, which is currently turning away 50 kindergartners alone each year, as downtown housing continues to expand.
Thank you to Ken Setzkorn of MidAmerican Energy for attending Tuesday night’s School Board meeting and presenting DMPS with a check for $549,968. The rebate was due to the district-wide energy efficiency and conservation efforts at Des Moines Public Schools.
Big news for six DMPS elementary schools that were award 21st Century Community Learning Center grants to support afterschool programs. They join 11 other schools in Des Moines that are already part of the 21CCLC program.
