Sarah's Key by Tatiana de Rosnay. A fictional story based on the little-known relocation of the Jews in France. Sad story but redemptive.

I loved this book when I first read it in 2003.  Frankly, still love it AND 10x more than the movie :)

The Notebook, Nicholas Sparks Pure schmaltz, a weepy boy-loves-girl story that sold something like billion copies.
