U.S. 1, Florida Keys

Leaving the mainland for the 120-mile-long island chain of Florida’s Keys, travelers enter a paradise of beach bars, water sports, and Parrotheads (Jimmy Buffett fans).

On August 13, 2004, Sanibel Island was hit hard by Hurricane Charley, a category four hurricane with 143 mph (230 km/h) winds.[28] It was the strongest to hit Southwest Florida since Hurricane Donna in September 1960. Shown is the main street on Sanibel Periwinkle way which had a tunnel made of Australian Pines that you got to drive and and that whistled in the wind.
