On March 25, 1818, the last public execution in Allegheny County took place in front of a crowd of 10,000 when John Tiernan was hanged for the murder of his co-worker, Pat Campbell, in Turtle Creek in 1817. The execution took place near what is now the intersection of Fourth Avenue and Ross Street. At the time, the area was known as Suke's Run Hollow and included a meadow and stream that flowed into the Monongahela River.
