Yellow-headed Blackbird (Xanthocephalus xanthocephalus) backlit by Jeff Dyck

Yellow-headed Blackbird (Xanthocephalus xanthocephalus) backlit by Jeff Dyck

In spring, the male Brewer’s blackbird is dressed in glossy greenish black plumage with a purplish black head and neck and yellow eyes. The female has a subdued brownish gray plumage and dark eyes. The bird has a peculiar gait, walking with short forward jerks of the head or running with its head held quite still as it forages on the ground for insects. It commonly flocks with red-winged blackbirds, tricolored blackbirds, or brown-headed cowbirds.
