This genus is native to North America, and all its species are hardy and vigorous Sunflower look-alikes. The virtues of the genus are well represented by H. helianthoides scabra 'Summer Sun' ('Sommersonne'), a rugged 4-footer that starts blooming in June and produces great armloads of 3″ semidouble flowers until early September. Carob Tree-- very drought tolerant -- long tap root (water occasionally in summer for more pods), pods are high in protein, sugar, calcium.  Need male and female.  6 yr old tree--> 5 pounds pods, 12 yr -->100 lbs in CA.  No fertilizer necessary.  Avoid waterlogging-- need well draining soil.  Scale insect is only pest prob.   50 ft tall.  Where to put it? replace pepper tree?
