People have been fascinated with the properties of spider silk for hundreds, perhaps thousands of years. Only in recent years have people had the knowledge & resources to make these amazing textiles from the silk of Madagascar Golden Orb Spiders (Nephila inaurata madagascariensis). I find it serendipitous that the genus name Nephila means "fond of spinning"
Ifotaka, Androy, Madagascar. Relaxing in the shade during the hottest part of the day, I was lucky to glimpse this woman and child framed by the window of a house. The kids in Ifotaka love having their pictures taken, but it took the encouragement of some of the other villagers to convince this woman not to be afraid of my camera. The woman's face is covered with a traditional skin rejuvenating mask.
