82nd Airborne paratroopers WWII. I have so much respect for the paratroopers! My uncle is alumni of the 82nd airborne!!

These men have been regrouped into security platoons for defense of the town.  The lead soldier is armed with an M3 .45 cal. sub-machine gun and an M1 Carbine over his shoulder.

Command of the 101st Airborne Division at Bastogne fell to Brigadier General Anthony C. McAuliffe, a short, genial artilleryman.

The Germans demanded the surrender of American troops surrounded in the town of Bastogne. United States General Anthony McAuliffe, above, replied to the ultimatum with a one-word response: NUTS!
