The Portonaccio Sarcophagus. The carving remains to this day an achievement – the dark and light contrast beautifully, a veritable chiaroscuro effect. This skill involved was enormous. The sarcophagus was probably used in the burial of a Roman general who was closely involved in the campaigns of Marcus Aurelius. He is seen on the front of the sarcophagus, frozen forever in a charge against his enemies. Yet the face of the high ranking officer for which the sarcophagus was intended is left…

björn III The was a complicated lighting experiment. The main idea was the use of Chiaroscuro (Italian for “light/dark”) Inspired my with works of Caravaggio where a subject comes out of the black and then disappears back into it. The key light is high above the camera and 2 reflected strip light fill in the side of the face and ears. A strobe on the background added separation betweens the blacks.

A mixture of natural and artificial lighting is used, to create a high contrast (Also known as chiaroscuro). The face is front-lit, and also rim-lit, this would be a useful shot in relation to my music video. I would combine this lighting with an arc shot, and edit the shot to move slowly around the actor. This would create genre conventions on a hip-hop music video. I would also change the setting of the shot to a more urban setting, as this would create a more urban theme.

1. a sunny holiday destination? Avoid taking portraits in direct sunlight. Harsh shadows and squeezed up eyes are nowhere near flattering. Search for trees, porches etc to soften the light or take a portrait near a white wall that reflects light and thereby softens shadows.
