07 Oct 43: Rear Admiral Shigematsu Sakaibara, commander of the Japanese garrison on Wake Island, orders the execution of 98 American civilian contractors held since the island was taken on 24 Dec 41, claiming they were trying to make radio contact with US forces. They are blindfolded and shot in cold blood. The "Wake Island Massacre" remains one of the more brutal episodes of the war in the Pacific. Oct 5, 1943: After a successful American air raid on the Japanese-occupied Wake Island in the North Pacific Ocean, 98 American civilian contractors being held as POWs are taken by Japanese forces to the northern end of the island, blindfolded, and machine-gunned. One prisoner escaped, carving the message "98 US PW 5-10-43" on a large coral rock near where the victims had been hastily buried in a mass grave. Rock Island Prison, Illinois. Elihu Weaver was captured in1863. He was imprisoned here from Oct 1863- Feb. 1865. He was then sent to Point Lookout Prison in Maryland. Elihu was 10 when he was captured. He was with Co D, 5th Battalion NC. Elihu is my 1st Cousin 4x Removed on the Ashley side
