The weathervane was found on a barn in Bridgeport, Connecticut, an appropriate locale because the town was the home of circus impresario P.T. Barnum. Both J.W. Fiske and J.L. Mott Iron Works of New York City offered full-bodied copper elephant weathervanes in two sizes, suggesting that the image had achieved a certain level of popularity in the late nineteenth century.
