Inside Hale Crater on Mars is an area known as the central peaks, a set of mountains streaked with active flows. An image from the Mars Reconnaissance Orbiter shows what may be seasonal streaks of salty water that appear as temperatures go up. This new look is interesting because of the reddish color of the RSL on the Hale mountains, which may indicate compounds like rust. Look to the upper left of the photo to pinpoint the feathery red-brown streaks extending away from the cliffs.

Active flows on Mars may be from seeping water

For several years, a satellite orbiting Mars has seen streaks flowing from Martian mountains during warm periods on the surface. Scientists have now confirmed that water is involved.

The rich clay deposits of the Nili Fossae region make it one of the most attractive areas for Mars researchers, as they provide conditions allowing organic materials to be preserved. Image Credit: NASA / JPL-Caltech / University of Arizona

The Syrtis Major Volcanic Province. Acquired by the High Resolution Stereo Camera on ESA’s Mars Express Satellite, this image depicts a detailed region of the Martian Nili Fossae Graben system. This system is an area of great interest to geologists due to the variety of its landscape. The graben system contains numerous troughs, plateaus, impact craters and depressions.

This view combines images taken through three different Pancam filters admitting light with wavelengths centered at 753 nanometers (near infrared), 535 nanometers (green) and 432 nanometers (violet). This "natural color" is the rover team's best estimate of what the scene would look like if we were there and able to see it with our own eyes. Seams have been eliminated from the sky portion of the mosaic to better simulate the vista a person standing on Mars would see.
