Bowes Castle is an intriguing late 12th century keep erected within a Roman fort. The castle - and the earlier fort - were erected to guard the Stainmore Pass across the Pennines between County Durham and Cumbria. The castle was in ruins by the early 14th century, but the keep still stands to a great height.
