Dr.John Collins Warren was born in 1778 in Boston…and by 1810 was a well known surgeon. He also was a paleontologist, and his book on the fossils along the Connecticut River was the first American science book illustrated with photographs. He is most well known, though, for performing the first surgery on a patient under anesthesia. That surgery was famously captured by the Boston photographers Southworth and Hawes. This daguerreotype is from about 1850.
